Hill & Tea Country
Sri Lanka’s mist-covered highlands of tea estates, colonial heritage and scenic mountain railways.
CENTRAL HIGHLANDS OF SRI LANKA
Hill & Tea Country
Sri Lanka’s central highlands rise above the coastal plains into a cooler world of rolling tea estates and layered mountain horizons. Introduced during the British colonial period, Ceylon tea reshaped both landscape and economy, leaving behind plantation bungalows, railway engineering landmarks and a distinct hill-country culture.
From Kandy’s gateway elevation to Nuwara Eliya’s colonial elegance and Ella’s dramatic escarpments, the region presents a refined contrast to the island’s tropical coastline. Scenic rail journeys curve through tunnels and viaducts, waterfalls descend from cloud forests, and mountain trails open to sweeping panoramas.
This is Sri Lanka at altitude — quieter, greener, and shaped by both heritage and terrain.
